Bamburg SJ Double Top

We just received this Cocobolo Rosewood/Bearclaw German Spruce Bamburg guitar, and it has impressed us all. Not only is it very elegant, but it has a beautifully articulate voice as well that just sings out – thanks to the double top. Comes with an excellent Ameritage case too.

Moreira – SJ (2006)

Featuring stunning Old Growth Brazilian Rosewood and a gorgeous Bearclaw German Spruce top, this excellent Moreira SJ is a visual knockout. Sonically, it packs a real punch too. The tone is big, and evenly balanced, with impressive detail.

Dake Traphagen – MP-S D’Aquisto 101

In 1982, world-renowned luthier Jimmy D’Aquisto built a rare and exceptional nylon string guitar. Thought to be only 1 of 3 in existence, and the only fully functional example, this extraordinary instrument was exquisite in tone, playability, and design. All who played it at Dream Guitars were in agreement that it was one of the finest crossover guitars in existence. Sadly, as with most treasures, the D’Aquisto nylon string was well beyond the means of the average player.

So when our friend and luthier James Condino blueprinted the D’Aquisto nylon for the Guild of American Luthiers, we struck upon the idea of commissioning a guitar built on the plans by another celebrated luthier – Dake Traphagen. The idea was to build a no-compromise representation of the D’Aquisto original, but at an affordable price. What resulted is even beyond our highest expectations! Santa Cruz – F46R

Built in the early ’80′s, this dulcet F46R, has had years to open up and develop a tone that is rich in character and detail. The back and sides are Brazilian, and the top is Sitka Spruce. Comes with a TKL case.

Huss & Dalton – MJC Custom

The good folks at Huss & Dalton sure know how to build a fine guitar! The MJC Custom has a big, authoritative voice with chimey top end and a great driving low-end for strong rhythm parts. Played with a flatpick, single notes explode from this big bodied beauty. It’s got a very fine sweet side too, and just loves to be fingerpicked as well. Langejans – R Baritone

John Kinnaird – Dreadnaught (2004)

This Kinnaird Dreadnaught has a back and sides of high quality Brazilian Rosewood, and a Sitka Spruce top. If you’re looking for a custom dread, this is a great guitar to consider – it offers a heap of good tone in an attractive, well built package.

Franklin – Jumbo (1992)

Built in 1992, this superb Franklin Jumbo fills the room with sound. It’s got a big voice, impressive volume, and excellent dynamic range. This is an exceptional guitar!

Built in 2005, this Indian Rosewood /Italian Spruce guitar is a wonderful example of luthier Nigel Forster’s work. Lehmann – Model 2000 Millenium

This Lehmann Millenium model, with its 9 stave back and laminate spacers, is a real head turner. Bernie Lehmann says, “The highly arched design of the back makes the guitar very comfortable to hold because the sides are narrowest at the lower bout—right where the player’s arm rests.” The ribbed, vaulted back also positively affects the tone in several ways. “The volume is increased by focusing the sound towards the soundhole. This in turn lends an amazing clarity of tone, which is ideal for recording and amplification. Thirdly, the projection and carrying power of this instrument are remarkably enhanced by the unique design of the back.”

McCollum Grand Auditorium

Gibson J-50 – 1955

This is the first of 2 extremely fine vintage Gibson J-50′s we just received. This square shoulder classic has had a few expert repairs done by luthier Bill Tippin. It has a replacement bridge, a neck set, and new frets. This guitar plays perfectly – and has outstanding tone.

This round shoulder J-50 was built back in 1954, and it is an excellent sounding and playing guitar. Luthier Bill Tippin recently did a neck set, so this guitar has superb action. Additionally, the tuners have been replaced.

Bill Tippin’s Staccato model is everything one could ask for in a small body guitar. The tone is rich and it has impressive volume too. It’s a very diverse little guitar, great for fingerstyle, and even vocal accompaniment. The Cuban mahogany back and sides lend this guitar a classic understated elegance.

Featuring Palo Escrito Rosewood and a divine Moonspruce top – this Greenfield G3 is a study in luthiery at it’s highest level. Michael Greenfield did an amazing job voicing this guitar – its tone is brilliantly clear, and articulate – with a remarkable bass presence as well. This is a very fine instrument that is capable of handling any styel of acoustic music. Highly recommended.

Some guitars just stop you in your tracks and make you say “Wow”! Here’s one of ‘em! This is a seriously fine Traugott with and absolutely stunning set of Brazilian Rosewood. It has one of the sweetest tones on the planet. This is a great one folks! Comes with a Calton case.

Here’s another great vintage J-50 that we just received. It’s loaded with all the classic Gibson tone these in demand guitars are known for. This beauty was built in 1956 and is a great player.

C.F. Martin & Co. – 1944  D-18 previously owned by David Grisman

The appeal of this exciting D-18 is undeniable. The guitar itself is an extraordinary example of a pre-war Martin, in excellent condition, loud, and dripping with great vintage tone.  It is eminently playable too, with an extremely comfortable neck. Other impressive attributes are its light weight, responsiveness, and phenomenal sustain. Add to that that we just received this guitar directly from David Grisman himself, and you can see why Dream Guitars is so excited to offer this guitar. Make no mistake about it – this is a once-in-a-lifetime musical instrument. Highly recommended!!

C.F. Martin & Co. 1930 0-18K

If you’ve been wanting to get into the world of vintage Martin Guitars, this is an excellent place to start. Most 0-18′s were mahogany, so this all-Koa bodied beauty is not something you see every day. The top has exceptional figure, which is also uncommon for a 0-18. In excellent condition, this is an exceptional playing fingerstyle instrument, with a warm, full tone that is sure to inspire – a very fine vintage Martin classic in every sense!

Here’s a charming little Mahogany Collings 00 from 2007. The wood is quite pretty, and the guitar produces a fine, full fingerstyle tone — and a surprisingly large sound when strummed. This very nice instrument is extremely fun and easy to play.

Alberico Guitars – OM

Fabrizio Alberico is one of the modern builders who is well known for the incredible build quality, playability and tone his guitars offer. This is a very cleanly built guitar and you can tell it comes from a builder who loves his craft. I had the pleasure of meeting Fab at the Swannanoa Gathering and he is a very genuine individual and his love of music comes through in his guitars. This OM, named ‘Emma’, has an articulate and sweet voice. The Cedar top is warm and full sounding while the rosewood adds power and brilliance. Stefan Sobell 12 string

An exceptional, and very rare guitar: This Stefan Sobell 12-string archtop was previously owned by  legendary guitarist Martin Simpson. Martin used it on his early albums. Dream Guitars owner Paul Heumiller has known this guitar for many years, and agrees that its voice has matured beautifully. It is believed that this is one of only two 12-string archtops built by Mr. Sobell. Featuring Indian Rosewood and European Spruce, this impressive instrument offers richness, clarity and sparkle –  and it is eminently playable!

Kathy Wingert Guitars – E

Lawrence Brown is a master at building faithful copies of historically significant instruments –  including Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque lutes, rare and vintage guitars, and instruments in the violin family. Since 1978 he has built over 1,800 instruments and has earned a well deserved international reputation for being a leading authority in his field. Currently Mr. Brown is concentrating on copies of Hermann Hauser I’s classical guitar from 1937 that was built for Andres Segovia. Ribbecke Guitar Co. – Halfling Thinline – 2010

Thus far, this is the only fan-fretted instrument that RGC has built — and they did a wonderful job. The playability is superb, and for such a thin guitar, this classy instrument has a nice amount of acoustic volume and warm bass. Plugged in, the sound rivals many higher-priced archtops. Easy to hold, and fun to play, the RGC Thinline Halfling is a true crossover instrument, based on Tom Ribbecke’s original Halfling Jazz Guitar — but only 2″ thick!

Here’s a very nice Martin HD-28 that just came into the shop yesterday evening. This stunning guitar has so many beautiful appointments, one doesn’t know where to look first. In 1982, world-renowned luthier Jimmy D’Aquisto built a rare and exceptional nylon string guitar. Thought to be only 1 of 3 in existence, and the only fully functional example, this extraordinary instrument was exquisite in tone, playability, and design. All who played it at Dream Guitars were in agreement that it was one of the finest crossover guitars in existence. Sadly, as with most treasures, the D’Aquisto nylon string was well beyond the means of the average player.

So when our friend and luthier James Condino blueprinted the D’Aquisto nylon for the Guild of American Luthiers , we struck upon the idea of commissioning a guitar built on the plans by another celebrated luthier - Dake Traphagen. The idea was to build a no-compromise representation of the D’Aquisto original, but at an affordable price. What resulted is even beyond our highest expectations! Bozo Beograd

A very special instrument from master luthier Bozo Padunavac. This is a 40th Anniversary Beograd Archtop model featuring Bozo’s signature ornate Abalone inlays and elaborate custom purfling. The maple back and sides and European Spruce top make for a rich and powerful voice. The incredible hand inlay work makes this a true work of art as well. Every surface is adorned with Paua Abalone, Herringbone and too many fine details to list so we’ll let the photos tell it’s story below. Be sure to admire the brass Tailpiece, gorgeous Headplate and amazing fingerboard inlay.

It’s hard to fathom, but this incredible archtop plays and sounds as good as it looks! The action is smooth and even, like an electric, and the tone is both complex and round. This guitar really sings with a flat pick.

Ron Pinkham’s guitars always impress us. He knows tone and his voice is compelling, powerful and complete. This Maple Dread is simply a cannon. The trebles fire across the room and the bass is strong. The overall voice is much fuller and richer than you might expect from Maple and it sounds great flatpicked, strummed and fingerpicked. The woods are top notch and extremely pretty and Ron’s fit and finish is always superb. If you are open to a less traditional dread, you might just find yourself a gem here….

Just in 03/13/12: We just received  this stunning new Traphagen dreadnought!

Over the years, luthier Dake Traphagen has built some of the finest classical, nylon and steel string guitars ever to grace the Dream Guitars Showroom and website. So it was with great anticipation that we awaited his newest creation, a dreadnought designed specifically with the flat-picker in mind. Simply put, this is an amazing new guitar. The tone is full and articulate, with incredible volume and projection. It is a joy to play.

Mr. Traphagen describes it this way – “The attack is strong and powerful yet smooth and even. With a little playing time this guitar will become even more powerful and colorful in tone. The entire building process went without a hitch, as if the guitar wanted to be made. Some guitars are more demanding while they’re being formed, trying to play little tricks on the luthier – but not this one.”
