Over the years, luthier Dake Traphagen has built some of the finest classical, nylon and steel string guitars ever to grace the Dream Guitars Showroom and website. So it is with great anticipation that we wait for his newest creation, a dreadnought designed specifically with the flat-picker in mind.

Mr. Traphagen describes it this way – “The attack is strong and powerful yet smooth and even. With a little playing time this guitar will become even more powerful and colorful in tone. The entire building process went without a hitch, as if the guitar wanted to be made. Some guitars are more demanding while they’re being formed, trying to play little tricks on the luthier – but not this one.”

Materials list:

Master Grade vertical grain Brazilian Rosewood back and sides

Master grade Adirondack spruce top.

25.5″ scale

1 11/16″ neck width at the nut

Mahogany neck

Ebony fret board

Gotoh 510 mini tuners black

Hand applied varnish finish

Honduran Rosewood bridge

This guitar will be arriving in a few short weeks. Please call for more details.

This just in!!

(Please scroll down for additional guitars.)

C.F. Martin & Co. – 1944 D-18 previously owned by David Grisman

The appeal of this exciting D-18 is undeniable. The guitar itself is an extraordinary example of a pre-war Martin, in excellent condition, loud, and dripping with great vintage tone. It is eminently playable too, with an extremely comfortable neck. Other impressive attributes are its light weight, responsiveness, and phenomenal sustain. Add to that that we just received this guitar directly from David Grisman himself, and you can see why Dream Guitars is so excited to offer this guitar. Make no mistake about it – this is a once-in-a-lifetime musical instrument. Highly recommended!!

C.F. Martin & Co. 1930 0-18K

If you’ve been wanting to get into the world of vintage Martin Guitars, this is an excellent place to start. Most 0-18′s were mahogany, so this all-Koa bodied beauty is not something you see every day. The top has exceptional figure, which is also uncommon for a 0-18. In excellent condition, this is an exceptional playing fingerstyle instrument, with a warm, full tone that is sure to inspire – a very fine vintage Martin classic in every sense!

Martin Guitars OMC-28 Lawrence Juber

Everything you’ve read about these guitars is true – they are superb musical instruments. With strong, solid trebles, this guitar is ready for any fingerstyle challenge and beyond. This is number 32 of 133 of the Indian Rosewood series. Great guitar!

Collings 000-1AC

Collings Guitars has a well earned reputation for consistant excellence, and this gorgeous 000-1AC is no exception. What a fine sounding, wonderfully built guitar! Comfortable and easy to play, the Collings 000 has a rich, sonorous voice that is appropriate for any genre of music.

Collings 00 1M

Here’s a charming little Mahogany Collings 00 from 2007. The wood is quite pretty, and the guitar produces a fine, full fingerstyle tone — and a surprisingly large sound when strummed. This very nice instrument is extremely fun and easy to play.

Alberico Guitars – OM

Fabrizio Alberico is one of the modern builders who is well known for the incredible build quality, playability and tone his guitars offer. This is a very cleanly built guitar and you can tell it comes from a builder who loves his craft. I had the pleasure of meeting Fab at the Swannanoa Gathering and he is a very genuine individual and his love of music comes through in his guitars. This OM, named ‘Emma’, has an articulate and sweet voice. The Cedar top is warm and full sounding while the rosewood adds power and brilliance. The setup is perfect and we love the small sound port that allows the player to hear it in detail. – Paul Heumiller

Indian Hill Guitars – Kauri Number 4 and Cocobolo Number 10

He has created designs that really pull all the possible tone from an instrument and inspire the player. We are delighted to be working with Indian Hill Guitars. For your consideration, we offer these two superb guitars; number 4 with Kauri back and sides, and number 10, which is Cocobolo Rosewood. Meticulously constructed, these guitars have an understated elegance and superb tone appropriate for any genre of music.

When Bill Tippin sent the following photos of his incoming Staccato model – I was blown away by its elegance and by the natural beauty of the wood. Bill’s idea was to make this guitar with refined simplicity, maximizing superb tone, in an instrument that had understated aesthetic charms.

Featuring extremely fine Cuban Mahogany back and sides, this guitar promises to be exactly what Mr. Tippin intended. If you’d like to learn more about this cool new Tippin Staccato please call. It is arriving next week, and will not last long.

Please note: in some of the following photos, Bill applied Naptha to portions of the wood (which does no harm ) to give an approximation of how the color will appear when finish is applied.

“I saw this guitar when Michi debuted it and we are delighted to have a chance to offer it to our clients. Everything about this Matsuda guitar is an expression of art and music. The low extension and capo work very simply and allow for instant access to creativity. Beside the obvious move to Low D, in alternate tunings many other possibilities come to life as well. It’s so well implemented that you do not need to retune either. Putting all the artful touches aside, this guitar has an inspiring musical character. It’s voice is beyond impressive, it’s sonorous, open and full of life. Michi is only making about 6 guitars per year so it is very rare that we have a preowned Matsuda. Here’s your chance to own perhaps the most creative builder working today.” – Paul Heumiller

“The tone on this work of art is unsurpassed. The low D extension is pretty cool, if you play a lot in Drop D tuning, although you have to remember the fingering doesn’t change from standard tuning when you use this feature.” – Al Petteway

This incredible Matsuda M1 guitar features a custom split headstock and Low D extension “capo” that drops the low E string down a full step. This wonderful instrument also showcases Michi’s impressive artistic talents. From the sweeping rosette, to the multi-dimensional side soundport to the ergonomic “sloped” neck heel, this is as fine a guitar as we’ve ever seen. The old growth Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and perfect Italian Spruce top make for a sublime, full tone with rich bass and musical treble that are clear and present. An incredible guitar that can change tunings with the flick of a wrist.

Greenfield Guitars GF Model

Michael Greenfield sent us this description of his new GF Model – the first of which will soon be arriving – and we thought you’d like to read all about it! – Steven

(please scroll down for shop photos of incoming GF Model)

About The GF Model

My name is Michael Greenfield and I am passionate about tone. Great tone. FAT tone. Squeezing every last molecule of tone out of my instruments. I have also been a player for over 40 years. So perfect feel, buttery-smooth playability and road-worthy stability are what my instruments are all about.

The Greenfield GF is the essential Greenfield Guitar. Production is limited and each GF is handcrafted in my Montreal shop. It is built with the same carefully selected materials, skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail I have built my reputation on. The GF is fashioned with elegant, understated appointments and delivers that legendary, piano-like Greenfield tone. Braces are shaped and plates voiced using small planes, gouges and chisels. I then carefully voice each body. Fingerboards are meticulously profiled with a compound radius and leveled to a tolerance of +/-.001”. Neck profiles are individually refined with rasps, files and lots of hand sanding. It is my philosophy that a truly extraordinary instrument is the result of the meticulous selection of the finest woods and materials with careful construction throughout. I assemble my instruments with hot, animal hide glue. This natural glue has been used for centuries by makers of the finest musical instruments because of its superior acoustic properties and its resistance to “creep”.

The GF model incorporates the same proprietary design found in all of my guitars but I have limited the choice of custom features and appointments in order to reduce the cost to you. The GF is perfect for the aficionado who appreciates a performance-level, luthier-built instrument without some of the more ornate appointments and complex options found on my custom commission guitars.

Stable necks

The neck on a Greenfield GF is fabricated from the finest, well-seasoned, air-dried lumber. Each neck is fit with carbon graphite rods which run its entire length extending into the peghead. The carbon graphite has a higher stiffness to weight ratio than steel and is extremely light, adding very little weight to the overall instrument. This makes for an extremely true and stable neck, which is also very energy efficient. The peghead is capped with contrasting wood veneers and an ebony faceplate with my “g” logo. Each neck is carved for exceptional comfort, feel and playability.

Finishing touches

A flawless, high gloss finish is standard on all Greenfield Guitars. The finishes are kept as thin as possible so as not to impede tone. Finally each instrument is meticulously fretted and carefully set up for optimal response and effortless playability. Because of this very personal approach, I believe that a Greenfield Guitar looks, feels and sounds special. It is my goal that you be not merely satisfied but thrilled with your finished guitar!

Climate Control

Second only to my espresso machine, the most important tool in the shop is my climate control system. The weather in Montréal swings from one extreme to the other during the course of the four distinct seasons we experience here. Winter cold spells can plunge the mercury to -40o C and the thermometer can soar to +40o C at the height of summer. And we experience everything in-between. Building in a stable environment is a challenge.

When I built this shop, I had my entire bench room, finish area and assembly/set-up room enveloped in a polyethylene vapor barrier and the adjoining walls to the rest of the building insulated. The vapor barrier even includes the floor! I had a sophisticated climate control system custom designed to maintain my shop’s environment at a constant 23o C and 43% relative humidity. The system heats, cools, humidifies and de-humidifies according to demand. There have even been winter days when the outside temperature is -18o C and the air conditioning came on because it got too hot in here!

Beyond the meticulous selecting, drying and seasoning of wood, all Greenfield Guitars are carefully assembled in this tightly controlled environment. As a result, the geometry of my guitars is stable and I can deliver your guitar with confidence, knowing that these instruments will easily withstand seasonal changes when properly maintained. Your Greenfield Guitar will become a treasured heirloom lasting a lifetime.

GF Model

The GF is an extremely versatile, grand concert size guitar that sits comfortably in your lap (it is slightly larger than an OM). It has a focused yet open voice with a tight responsive bass, transparent mids and thick, clear, ringing highs. The GF is quick to respond to even the lightest touch and it lends itself well to many different styles of music. It is evenly balanced from string to string and everywhere on the fretboard; including the upper register above the body joint. The GF has the ability to reproduce complex chords with piano-like clarity, while articulating each note in fingerstyle patterns. While primarily a fingerstyle guitar, it is also superb for light strumming, acoustic jazz and even classical repertoire.

This is a beautiful, all original vintage 1956 Les Paul Goldtop with a carved maple top and mahogany back and neck. It features a bound rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlay, a pearl logo and Kluson tuners with tulip shaped tuner buttons. It has many advanced features such as the stop tailpiece and Tune-O-Matic bridge made famous on late 50′s Les Pauls. This guitar features 2 “Soapbar” P-90 pickups with cream colored covers. Since it is pre 1960 it has a nice full neck. This guitar has that worn in feel that cannot be reproduced. This is a lightweight Gold Top that screams. The neck is simply wonderful, and the entire guitar sings with a classic tone from a bygone era.

“Ok, now we are having fun! This is the real deal, a completely original, solid, lightweight, incredible soulful 1956 Les Paul Gold Top – The one to own. This one has to be played to be believed. The feel is that special and the tone from the original P-90s is powerful. We all hope this one sticks around a while because it’s just too much fun to play! This is the market to buy instruments like this. You’ll be happy you did 10 years from now, both because of all the fun you’ll have had, plus it is sure to increase in value.” – Paul Heumiller

Here’s a rare opportunity to get the Laskin Guitar of your dreams!

As many of you know, Dream Guitars regularly custom orders one-of-a-kind instruments from the world’s finest luthiers. Slated for completion approximately 8 months from now, we have scheduled the delivery of another world-class guitar from luthier/inlay artist extraordinaire William “Grit” Laskin.

Each of Grit’s guitars follows a theme; most recently we have had the pleasure of hosting his “Three Wise Men” and “The Blue Trumpet” guitars – stunning creations each.

The incoming guitar will be built from the winning combination of Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce - there is still time to customize the rest. That means, this guitar can be personalized in any way you choose.

This is a rare opportunity to get a Laskin without the typical lengthy wait time – customized with the inlay and theme of your choice.

Please call today to find out how to make the incoming Grit Laskin Masterwork your very own.
