2019 Taran DS5, Macassar Ebony/Master Grade Swiss Moon Spruce
2019 Taran DS5 in Macassar Ebony and Swiss Moonspruce. DS stands for “Dowling Signature,” and you can feel the care and intention put into this build. Five years old at the time of publication, you can sense the sonic maturation of the guitar, which likely sounded lively right from the start. With semi-hemispherical EVO frets, a deconstructed rosette, and a microbevel, this guitar is stunning. It feels great and sounds even better. From the fit to the finish, this guitar is a masterpiece. Listen to the demo and check out the photos for yourself! A true Dream Guitar here.

Our very first from Michel Aboudib, this 00 from 2024, serial number 26, is decked out in Austrian Spruce and East Indian Rosewood and has a lot going on. Michel’s signature style of rosette carving clearly reflects an original continuation of his time working with the one and only Ervin Somogyi. The satin neck feel, in contrast to the gloss body, is always a favorite combo for us here at the shop, and the feel of this neck, in particular, is quite comfortable. The detail in the bridge carving is incredibly stunning. So much work and detail are present in the appearance of this instrument—not to mention the sound. But we’ll let you hear and see that for yourself!

Livewire! We just landed a brand new Sonic Replica from Galloup Studios that’s a force to be reckoned with. A copy of a particular ’39 D-18 in Bryan Galloup’s collection, this Sonic Replica is light as a feather (under four pounds), and oh so snappy and quick. See below for more info about the process behind their Sonic Replica project.
The Sonic Replica Guitar Project is a research initiative undertaken by Galloup Studios with the aim of reverse profiling vintage acoustic guitars. For a sonic replica model to be created, an actual example of the instrument must first be meticulously studied and reverse profiled within the Galloup Studios Department.
Once a guitar is considered appropriate for reverse engineering, each instrument undergoes a CAT scan to gather essential density information for reverse profiling. Subsequently, the instrument is inspected for not only standard specifications but also finish thickness, top thickness, and back thickness, ensuring accurate model replication. Additionally, each working model not only replicates exterior measurements but also replicates air resonance, top resonance, back resonance, and top deflection.
The project aims to emphasize that in order for a sonic replica model to exist, there was originally a vintage version of that guitar. To date, we have reverse profiled a 1937 D18, a 1939 D18, and a 1930 OM. The serial numbers for sonic replicas incorporate the actual serial number of the original instrument, followed by “SR” to denote Sonic Replicas.
As such, the Sonic Replica Project ultimately serves as a research endeavor where the derivatives are sonic replica models used to prove theories and measurements with fully functioning models. Thus, sonic replicas are not merely model guitars; they represent an ongoing research and development of the American vintage flat top guitar.

Special, indeed. Here we’ve landed a gorgeous example of Kathy Wingert’s prowess at the bench that’s been dressed to the nines with gorgeous inlays along the fretboard, rosette, and headstock. Dramatic Black & White Ebony for the back and sides is the perfect contrast to German Spruce on top, giving the voice a smooth, smooth, smooth flavor with glassy definition throughout the registers. The top end has that sweet brand of sparkle that we see in so many of Kathy’s guitars. The lively string energy really draws in the player. On the visual side of things, Kathy has inlaid a series of flowers, vines, leaves, and a hummingbird, all rendered in vibrant Abalone and Pearl. Dark Ebony bindings contrast and set off the back and sides, and Kathy has also added a subtle arm bevel to the lower bout to make this 2017 Wingert EVC even easier to play.

This 2018 Taran Tirga Mhor features European Spruce on top and a very new-to-us back and sides made of Swartsa Wamara, which is as gorgeous visually as it is sonically. It’s fitted with a multiscale setup of 26″ on the bass and 25.5″ on the treble extremities. A Wenge neck with a perfectly soft V profile and a sound port offer an exquisite view inside the guitar, showcasing Taran Guitars’ special construction. From 2016, this PRS DGT Semi-Hollow has flown into our shop, and what a mighty bird of prey it is! Part of their “Guitar of the Month” series, this is one of twenty for the month of April. It’s in commemoration of the PRS Private Stock’s twentieth anniversary, and they certainly pulled out all the stops in celebration. African Ribbon Mahogany for the back, and Ziricote on top. The fingerboard also features the “birds of a feather” inlay, but these are just a few things that set this guitar apart. It is a semi-hollow DGT “David Grissom Trem,” which is rare enough in and of itself. This guitar has all the tone and aesthetic one could want. Whether you’re a PRS acolyte, a collector, or even an electric guitar enthusiast, this guitar is for you.

John Slobod, you slay us. This 2024 000-28 is such an incredible piece, and it’s practically brand new. Not only is the Brazilian Rosewood gorgeously figured and sultry dark, butit pairs handsomely with a creamy German Spruce top and Rosewood bindings. Fit and finish is flawless throughout, and the voice is pianistic, especially for a small-bodied guitar. 12 frets to the body with a 25.4″ scale length seems to strike the perfect balance of crisp frontend and warm overtones. Gold EVO frets and a pyramid bridge are the cherry on top. Comes in an Ameritage case.

Great headroom allows for a range of attacks; this Spohn has the gears for light play and more driving stuff too. Short scale and a 1 3/4” nut width make for an easy playing experience, as does the fantastic weight balance between neck and body. All wrapped up in a lightweight BAM case.
